The active ingredient shared by each product in the Phenergan range is the antihistamine promethazine hydrochloride BP. Promethazine is an antihistamine derived from phenothiazine and is an HA-receptor antagonist. It does not block histamine but it interferes with its effectiveness within the body. Histamine is a naturally occurring substance that is released in response to allergens present in the body, causing allergy symptoms. Promethazine also has anticholinergic properties, which means that it relaxes the smooth muscle tissue by blocking the transmission of specific nerve pulses.

Phenergan treats the symptoms of perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis, also known as hayfever. It is effective against all of the allergic reactions commonly associated with allergies, including sneezing, itchy nose, irritated eyes, swelling, insect bites, and urticaria, also called "hives".

Phenergan 10mg (milligrams) tablets each contain 10mg the antihistamine promethazine hydrochloride BP and are available in a packet of 25 tablets. Phenergan 25mg tablets contain 25mg of promethazine hydrochloride BP and will provide effective relief from allergic disorders for 24-hours. Phenergan 25mg is available in packets of 25 tablets. Phenergan Elixir is formulated for use by children and is alcohol-free, sugar-free and easy to take. Each 5ml (millilitres) of Phenergan Elixir contains 5mg of the active ingredient Promethazine Hydrochloride BP. Phenergan Elixir is available in a 100ml bottle.
