Zadine products share the common active ingredient azatadine maleate, which is an antihistamine. Azatadine maleate is specially formulated not to cause drowsiness. It works by blocking the effects of histamine within the body. When someone has an allergy, the body mistakenly releases histamine to combat a normally harmless allergen that has entered their system. Allergy symptoms are relieved by reducing the amount of histamine released through this process.

Hayfever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis as it is more fully known, is a very common type of allergy. The symptoms of hayfever include sneezing, an itchy, runny nose, and irritated, watery eyes. The azatadine maleate in Zadine will also relieve the itching and irritation associated with urticaria ("hives"), insect stings, and other skin complaints associated with allergies.

Zadine 12 Hour Relief Tablets are available in packets of 20 or 50 tablets, with each tablet containing one milligram (mg) of the antihistamine azatadine maleate, and providing relief from allergy symptoms for 12 hours. Zadine Syrup is available in a 100ml bottle of black currant flavoured syrup, with each 5ml (millilitre) of Zadine Syrup contains 0.5mg of the antihistamine azatadine maleate as the active ingredient. Zadine Syrup is specially formulated for use by children aged 6 to 12 years of age, or by those adults who prefer to take syrup rather than tablets.
