Zyrtec products each contain the second-generation, cetirizine hydrochloride as their active ingredient. Cetirizine hydrochloride is an H1-receptor antagonist that works by blocking the body's production of histamine so that it is not released. If someone has an allergy, histamine is released by the body in response to an allergen that is mistakenly perceived as a threat by the immune system. By reducing the amount of histamine present in the system, the severity of the allergy symptoms will be alleviated.
Zyrtec provides fast relief from the symptoms of hayfever, or seasonal rhinitis, and also treats other allergic conditions. These include perennial allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, insect bites, pruritus, and "hives", or urticaria, which are manifested on the surface of the skin. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction, as typified by hayfever, include a runny or itchy nose, sneezing, and watery, irritated eyes.
Each Zyrtec tablet contains 10mg of the antihistamine cetirizine hydrochloride and they are available in packs of 30 tablets. Zyrtec tablets are taken once daily to provide 24-hour relief from the symptoms of allergies. Zyrtec Oral Solution is available in a 75ml bottle, with each millilitre (ml) of solution containing one milligram (mg) of the active ingredient cetirizine hydrochloride, and it only needs to be taken once daily. Each ml of Zyrtec Oral Drops contains 10mg of cetirizine hydrochloride and the oral drops are available in a 10ml bottle. Zyrtec Oral Drops provide a convenient dosage option, especially for younger children over two years of age.
